What do I need to do?

In this page we explain how Shetland Motorbike Training takes you from your Theory Test to Full Licence!

On receipt of your enquiry we shall ask...

Have you successfully completed your motorcycle theory test?
If you do not already have your Theory Test we shall ask that you get back to us once you have completed it.

There are two reasons we prefer that you have your theory test before you sit your CBT -
1 - If you have little, to no, road experience then competing and passing your Motorcycle Theory Test is by far the safer option. It gives you an insight into hazard awareness, road signs and marking etc. (Therefore helps us help you through your CBT more effectively).
2 - The Module 1 and Module 2 Tests cannot be applied for until you have passed your Theory Test. So, by having this at the ready once you have done your CBT you can go straight onto the next step of getting your full license.

How old are you?
If you are turning 16, you can apply for your Provisional Licence before your 16th birthday. This means you will be ready to sit your CBT once you are 16.

Your age will also determine which full licence options you can go for.

What types of licence are available?

The first thing you need to do is to Sit your Theory Test

In Shetland, this is done upstairs in the Toll Clock Centre.

There is a separate Theory Test for Motorcycles. The Motorcycle Theory Test is valid for 2 years and costs £31.50 to sit.
You can practice mock tests online here.

To book your theory test please call 0300 200 1122 and follow the automated menu or visit www.direct.gov.uk/motoring to book online.

Please Note:
THE MODULE 1 & 2 TESTS CANNOT BE APPLIED FOR WITH OUT A VALID THEORY TEST.

The Motorcycle Theory Test now consists of two parts...
Part 1 contains 50 multiple choice questions of which a pass mark of 43 or more must be obtained.
Part 2 consists of the Hazard Perception Video Clips in which a pass mark of  44 out of 75 must be obtained. Both Part 1 and Part 2 must be passed in order to obtain an overall pass.

Essental Reading - Before your Theory Test
We recommend that you use the ‘The Official DSA Theory Test for Motorcyclists’ CD  ROM (RRP £12.71) and ‘The Official DSA Guide to Hazard  Perception’ DVD (RRP £15.65) for your Theory Test revision.

You can order all of these items online from TSO direct at www.tsoshop.co.uk - click on Driving  Standards Agency.

Followed by your Compulsory basic Training (CBT )

While you may hold a licence which allows you to ride a motorbike provisionally, it is only validated once you have successfully completed a CBT and received your  DL196 certificate.

The CBT takes a minimum of 5 - 6 hours to complete. We normally have them on a weekend through the day, or evenings in the summer time. We do the CBT 'off road' instruction at the Anderson High School Multi Court.

For cost please visit our prices page.

  • The CBT consists of 5 elements
    • Introduction - Understanding the aims of the CBT,  importance of having the correct equipment and clothing.
    • Practical on-site training - Become familiar with the  motorcycle and its controls and how it works.
    • Practical on-site riding - Ride the bike round a figure  eight, ride the bike slowly under control, carry out a u-turn manoeuvre, change
      gear, emergency stop, etc.
    • Practial on-road training - Recognise the legal  requirements for riding on the road, understanding the Highway Code, be aware of
the need to be clearly visible to other road users, etc.
    • Practical on-road riding - Roundabouts, junctions,  pedestrian crossing, traffic lights, gradients, bends, (min 2 hours on-road  riding), etc.

Once you have completed the Compulsory Basic Training,  you will have gained the DL196 CBT Certificate.  Which is valid for 2 years.
This allows you to ride on the road unaccompanied:
    • With L-plates (front & rear).
    • Not carrying a Pillion Passenger.
    • You cannot ride on a Motorway.
    • You cannot ride a bike larger than a 125cc
